If You Cannot Pay Anything Right Now, Collection Can Be Paused
If paying the IRS anything would leave you unable to cover basic living expenses, you may qualify for Currently Not Collectible status. When the IRS grants it, active collection pauses. No levies, no garnishment, while you are in hardship. Peter Kici, EA, helps Central Florida taxpayers request and support that status.

What Currently Not Collectible Actually Means
It does not erase the debt, but it stops the IRS from collecting while you cannot afford to pay. Interest still accrues, and the IRS can review your situation later, but for many people in genuine hardship it is breathing room that prevents a levy.
Do You Qualify?
It is based on your income versus your necessary living expenses. If your allowable expenses meet or exceed your income, you may be a candidate. We document your finances the right way so the request holds up. If your situation sits somewhere between hardship and full payment, an installment agreement or an Offer in Compromise may fit better, and we will tell you.
The Collection Clock Keeps Running
Here is the part many people miss. The 10-year IRS collection statute generally keeps running while you are in this status. For some taxpayers that means the debt can expire before the IRS ever collects it. Whether that applies to you depends on the dates, and we check.
How We Request It For You
- Free consultation to review income, expenses, and the balance.
- We prepare the financial documentation the IRS requires.
- We submit the request and deal with the IRS for you.
- We advise on what happens next, including how the collection statute affects your case.
Questions People Ask About Hardship Status
Will I get levied while in this status?
The point of it is to pause that. Getting it in place is what protects you. If a levy is already in motion, see levy and asset seizure help.
Does it hurt my credit?
The IRS does not report this status to credit bureaus. A tax lien, if one was filed, is a separate issue we can address.
Is it permanent?
No. The IRS can review it if your finances improve, which is why we also look at longer-term options.
Do you serve my area?
Yes. The practice is based in Central Florida and serves Orlando and the surrounding communities, plus taxpayers in all 50 states by phone and video.
