Most tax professionals will tell you they understand what it feels like to owe the IRS. Peter Kici doesn’t just understand it — he lived it.

Before he became a federally licensed Enrolled Agent representing taxpayers before the IRS, Peter was on the other side of that equation: six years of unfiled returns, $22,000 in back taxes, penalties and interest piling up, threatening letters from the IRS arriving almost daily, and no idea where to turn.

That experience is what drives everything he does at Tax Debt Relief Group.

From the Marine Corps to Finance — And Then the 2008 Crash

Peter’s career began in service — first to his country as a United States Marine Corps veteran, and then in the world of finance, helping homeowners and business owners secure loans to buy homes and buildings. For years, he did what most people do: filed his taxes on time, paid what he owed, and got on with life.

Then 2008 happened.

The real estate and finance markets collapsed. Peter took a significant financial hit — one that changed everything. As the income dried up, a thought crept in that many people in that situation know all too well: I’m not really making money right now, so I don’t really need to file.

He told himself he’d catch up eventually. Wishful thinking, as he’d later discover.

Six Years of Unfiled Returns — and Then the Letters Started

Years passed. The returns went unfiled. Then one day the IRS letters arrived — first politely, then not so politely. Six years of unfiled returns. Penalties and interest he hadn’t accounted for. A total bill of over $22,000. And a wife who, understandably, was not pleased to learn what had been happening.

“I was getting it from every direction,” Peter recalls. “IRS letters threatening to levy my bank accounts. My wife furious. And when I tried to call the IRS for help, I got voicemail hell — and when I finally reached a real person, they transferred me to a hang-up.”

It was COVID, it was a dark Central Florida January, and Peter felt, in his own words, “more helpless and pressured from all sides than I’d ever felt in my adult life.”

The Turning Point: A Rainy Saturday and a Podcast

On a cold, rainy Saturday in January, driving to a notary appointment, Peter happened to catch a podcast featuring an old friend from his finance days — Carlos Samaniego — talking about tax debt and the options available to taxpayers in trouble.

He pulled over and listened until it ended. Then he called Carlos immediately.

That’s when Peter heard the term Enrolled Agent for the first time. He learned that Carlos was federally licensed by the IRS and the Department of the Treasury to represent taxpayers directly before the IRS — with authority that places Enrolled Agents alongside attorneys and CPAs as the only three types of professionals allowed to do so.

Carlos took Peter’s case, negotiated directly with the IRS, and reached an installment agreement that resolved the debt on terms Peter could actually manage. “It was like the sun broke through the clouds,” Peter says. “The weight was gone.”

He Didn’t Just Get Help — He Became the Help

Most people would have closed that chapter and moved on. Peter couldn’t stop thinking about how many people were going through exactly what he’d been through — and how few people knew that an Enrolled Agent even existed, let alone what one could do for them.

He enrolled in Eva Rosenberg’s Tax Mama course — one of the most rigorous EA prep programs available, three days a week, three hours a day, with live Zoom sessions, thousands of practice questions, and mountains of study material. He studied 4–5 hours a day, seven days a week, on top of the coursework.

The IRS Special Enrollment Examination consists of three separate 100-question tests covering individual taxes, business taxes, and IRS operations and procedures. Each test costs $208 to sit. Peter failed his first one.

“It was a gut punch,” he says. “I sat there at the testing center looking at the word FAILED on the screen. And I thought: I need to know this like a language. Fluently. There’s no shortcut.”

He doubled down. More flash cards. More publications. More hours. A year after starting the process, Peter Kici passed all three exams and became a federally licensed Enrolled Agent — something most people who knew him, by his own admission, quietly doubted would happen.

“I’m a 60-something guy who hadn’t been in school in over 30 years. They were being nice saying good luck. What I was saying was: this isn’t luck — it’s hard work.”

Why This Matters for You

When you work with Peter, you’re not working with someone who learned about IRS debt from a textbook. You’re working with someone who opened those letters, felt that dread, made the call for help, and then spent years mastering the system so he could be that call for someone else.

He knows what it feels like to not know where to turn. He knows the relief of having someone who does know step in and handle it. And he knows the IRS — the procedures, the programs, the pressure points, and the paths through.

At Tax Debt Relief Group, Peter brings that combination — lived experience, federal licensure, and a Marine’s sense of mission — to every client he serves.
